Student Renewal Options

S.T.A.B.L.E. Learner Course Renewal Options – 3 Options (updated July 2024)

Learner Course completion cards are valid for two years, therefore, renewal is recommended every two years.

There are 3 options available for Learner course renewal – For 6th Edition Only:

  1. 2 classroom offerings: Full-length or short-length renewal course.
  2. Online Learner course: In partnership with S.T.A.B.L.E., this course is offered by HealthStream.  See www.stableprogram.org/shop/ for more information or to order the course.

For classroom offerings, the Lead instructor will make the final decision regarding which option to select. The following information will assist the Instructor in that decision.  When selecting a full-length versus short renewal course, 2 factors need to be considered:

  1. The level of facility where newborn care is delivered: Level 1 (basic), Level 2 (intermediate), or Level 3 – 4 (NICU)
  2. The student’s experience with sick newborns and neonatal knowledge base.

Option ONE: Course Type – Full-Length Learner Course Renewal (Classroom)

  • The Instructor team teaches a full-length learner course.
  • Participants must have access to the most current edition of the Learner manual and the instructor must utilize the most current edition of program materials.
  • Quizzes and Testing: Participants must take all module quizzes and achieve a final mixed module passing score of no more than 2 wrong.
  • Lead instructor submits a student roster indicating RENEWAL.
  • Note: Support Instructor training may only occur in a full-length renewal course.

Option One is recommended for:

  • Level 1 facilities or facilities without obstetric services.
  • Health care providers who primarily work with well newborns or mildly ill newborns in level 2 and 3 facilities.
  • Facilities with a low transport or transfer volume due to a low number of infants born who are ill and/or premature.
  • Students with a current learner course completion card (not an expired status). If there has been no new edition of the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program released, then the Lead instructor is permitted to use discretionary judgement regarding whether the student has the expertise level to attend a short length renewal course (option two). If the course completion card has expired, or the S.T.A.B.L.E. course has been updated to a new edition, the student must attend a full-length learner course.
  • Participants who previously scored 5 or more wrong on the mixed module test and were not awarded a course completion card.

Option TWO: Course Type – Short-Length Learner Course Renewal

  • Teach a renewal (shorter duration) learner course. The renewal course presentation takes approximately 5 hours to teach (not including breaks). The renewal course slides are on the S.T.A.B.L.E. Learner Course USB or DVD. Slightly less than half of the S.T.A.B.L.E. learner course slides have been removed from the full-length course, and it is expected the pace of the course will be faster than when teaching a full-length learner course to less experienced personnel.
  • Participants must have access to the most current edition of the Learner manual and the instructor must utilize the most current edition of program materials.
  • Quizzes and Testing: Participants must take all quizzes in the program and achieve a final mixed module passing score of 0 to 2 wrong.
  • Lead instructor submits a student roster indicating RENEWAL.

Option Two is recommended for:

  • Students who previously completed a full-length Learner course.
  • Students with a current learner course completion card (not an expired status). If the card has expired, or the course has been updated to a new edition, the student must attend a full-length Learner course.
  • Nurses, respiratory therapists and physicians who work with newborn intensive care unit patients. Please consider the knowledge base and work area of participants when selecting Option Two.  Note: The Lead instructor is responsible for verifying the student’s course completion card is current and that they previously passed a full-length learner course.
  • The renewal slides are also designed to serve as the physician edition 5-hour program. Please note that the shortened physician edition program is intended for post-residency physicians. Those students renewing under Option Two may also attend with physicians if desired.
